ABOUT JAMES

More than two decades ago, James was admitted to the Arizona Bar and began his law career in complex commercial litigation with the law firm of Brown & Bain (now Perkins Coie) in Phoenix. He was admitted to the Utah Bar in 1993 and joined Scalley & Reading in Salt Lake City where he continued practicing law in commercial litigation and added general business and criminal defense to his practice areas. During that time James joined the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) of the Army National Guard as a legal officer (JAG). In addition to providing family, small business, basic estate planning, and military law advice to Army officers and soldiers, James achieved the rank of Major, earned his jump wings at the US Army jump school at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and was recognized by the Army for his meritorious service. In 2005 James was admitted to the Nevada Bar and joined the Henderson, Nevada law firm of Peel Brimley. As a partner at Peel Brimley, James' practice areas included corporate and business law, contractor licensing, and contracts. Now, as the managing attorney of his own law firm in Las Vegas, he continues practicing in these areas, along with a return to the practice of family law, and contributes time to pro-bono cases and "Ask a Lawyer" clinics for the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and for Nevada Legal Services.

James has been a member of the law faculties of the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School, Concord University Law School, and the University of North Dakota Law School, where he also served as the Director of the Legal Research and Writing Program. As a law professor, he has enjoyed designing and teaching courses in legal research and writing, the legal process, appellate advocacy, torts, trial advocacy, contracts, and criminal law. James has continued his love for teaching the law as a faculty member for local professional seminars on the subjects of business and contracts law in addition to volunteering his time as a guest teacher at local schools on "Law Day" and as a frequent contributor of answers to "free legal questions" on AVVO.com.

James graduated magna cum laude from the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School where he was recognized by West Publishing Company for outstanding scholastic achievement and by the law school for the highest grade in Legal Negotiation and Settlement, with an appointment as an articles editor for the BYU Law Review, and with a membership in the Order of the Coif for outstanding legal scholarship.
