Comey & Shepherd was founded in 1946 by Harold D. Comey, as a largely commercial firm. In 1950, residential sales were added with the arrival of Edward Shepherd. In 1968, the firm was sold to Roy Nelson, who was its Chairman until his death in 1996.

Scott Nelson assumed the role of CEO in 1990 and Terry Hankner the role of President and the two are operating owners of the firm today. Comey & Shepherd has the highest per person productivity in the greater Cincinnati area and one of the highest in the country. The firm was ranked by Real Trends at the 115th largest firm in the US.

The firm offers mortgage and title services through commonly owned affiliate firms, as well as a complete relocation services department.
