Debra E. Stokes is a sole practitioner in Debra E. Stokes, L.L.C. representing clients primarily in family law and divorce cases. She is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, Nexis Lexis, which is the highest peer rating achievable for legal ability and ethical standards, in both general and family law. She has extensive experience in the Family Court, the Court of Common Pleas, the Court of General Sessions, as well as in Federal Court. She is a certified mediator in the Family Court. She graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1980.

Debra was admitted to practice in the State of South Carolina on November 12,1980, and since that time has been engaged in the private practice of law in Charleston, South Carolina. She is formerly a partner in the law firm of Stokes & Thompson, which represented clients in civil, criminal and family law matters in all South Carolina state courts and civil and criminal matters in the federal court. She served as Corporation Counsel to the Town of Mt. Pleasant from 1984 through 1987. Debra is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the State of South Carolina, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in the State of South Carolina and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

She is a member of the Charleston County Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, American Bar Association, the American Academy of Family Mediation and the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. She is also a member of the Family Law Section and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of both the South Carolina Bar and the American Bar Association. She is a former member of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and the American Trial Lawyers Association.

Debra has been a speaker on the faculty for the South Carolina Supreme Court Continuing Legal Education "Hot Tips from the Experts," lecturing on the practice of family law. She has served on the Charleston Board of Neighborhood Legal Services and the Board of Directors for the John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and serves our community by providing volunteer pro bono legal services to community members through the Low Country Aids Center legal clinic. Debra has extensive litigation experience in a wide variety of courts and strives to provide her clients with excellent representation throughout their case.
