Fryberger, Buchanan, Smith & Frederick, P.A., combines the tradition and history of two of Duluth's oldest and most accomplished law firms. The two firms were known for many years as the Fryberger and Wheeler law offices.

The Fryberger office was founded in 1893 by Herschel B. Fryberger, Sr. In 1906 Mr. Fryberger moved his growing practice to Duluth's Lonsdale Building, which still serves as the firm's headquarters.

Herschel B. Fryberger, Jr. joined his father's practice in 1932. He practiced for over sixty years in Duluth, until his death in 1998. Joined by Nick Smith in 1960, and Dexter Larsen in 1967, the Fryberger office developed a tradition of offering Duluth businesses and families sound legal advice based on hard work and careful preparation.

The Fryberger law office increased its emphasis in the field of government law in 1968, when Harold Frederick resigned as Duluth City Attorney to join the firm.

The Wheeler office was established by Amasa E. Wheeler in 1926. The Wheeler firm grew to become Wheeler, Burns, Buchanan & Sanford, and served its clients in the areas of corporate, banking, tax, probate and municipal law.

Enhancing their versatility in providing comprehensive services, the Fryberger and Wheeler firms merged in 1971 to become Fryberger, Buchanan, Smith & Frederick, P.A. In 1991 the firm opened a branch office in St. Paul where attorneys focus on representing northern Minnesota clients before the legislature. To better meet the legal needs of the firm's Wisconsin clientele, a branch office was opened in Superior in 1995. In response to the needs of a large industry client, the firm established a satellite office in Iron Mountain, Michigan in 1998.
